America's largest documentary film festival arrives in New York on Thursday. Over the course of the week-long event, you can see more than 150 movies, at SVA Theatre, Bow Tie Chelsea Cinemas, and the IFC Center, including 19 world premieres and more than 200 special in-person guests. Why yes, Halloween was a few weeks ago. But some people, and you know who you are, simply can't get enough of chills, scares, and gore. Enter the NYC Horror Film Festival. More than 50 films are slated to be screened, and awards will be presented in such categories as Best Special Effects and Best Sound Design. There's also a Lifetime Achievement Award given to someone as deserving as Wes Craven (the 2012 winner). The James Beard Foundation Gala pays tribute to Charlie Trotter, an acclaimed chef who died earlier in 2013. Luminaries like Emeril Lagasse, Mindy Segal, and Carrie Nahabedian will be cooking such New American delights as Kobe Beef Tartare and Toasts with Tabasco® Original Red Sauce and Sushi Popsicles, with wine pairings by Larry Stone. The ment'or Young Chef Competition lets budding chefs compete for a stagiaire. (Note: these chefs are young, but they aren't young-young. They're all currently working in professional kitchens in New York, Massachusetts, Maine, and elsewhere.) All proceeds benefit men'tor, which seeks to build a "sustainable community of young American professionals that are knowledgeable and confident in their career pursuits and will be life-long ambassadors of quality and excellence in the world of gastronomy." The Brooklyn Crush Wine & Artisanal Food Festival offers attendees more than 250 wines (selected by Vintry Fine Wines) to try while strolling around the space's roomy 22,000 square feet and grooving to the sounds of live jazz. Appetizers and other food will be provided by the folks behind such establishments as Sahadi's, Raaka virgin chocolate, Cheese Pops, and Cracked Candy.
