The 52nd annual New York Film Festival continues this weekend, after kicking off last week with Gone Girl, the much-anticipated movie adaptation of the super-successful novel. Other highlights include Inherent Vice, Paul Thomas Anderson's movie based on the Thomas Pynchon novel. This is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, and anything you get tickets for is likely worth seeing. Unscripted New York celebrates "artists who work without a script and tell their stories in the moment." All told, the five-day festival features 20 improvised theatre groups and more than 150 performers. In addition to 15 stage shows, five improvised movies will be screened, panels will be held, workshops will be conducted, and parties will be thrown and attended. The tenth annual New York Gypsy Festival once again brings performers from all over the world to the city for several weeks of music. This year, you can hear musicians from Mexico, India, Serbia, Slovakia, and elsewhere, playing bhangra, brass, and other gypsy styles. Make sure to get your tickets early for the Pakava It Orchestra, which purports to be Russia's happiest band. The countdown to Halloween begins on Saturday, when Boo at the Zoo opens for the season. On Saturdays and Sundays through November 1, the Bronx Zoo gets into the spirit of the season with pumpkins, performances, parades, hay mazes (with treat stations), "creepy craft" workshops, and other activities for grownups and kids alike. The first annual Brooklyn Local Craft Beer Festival takes place on Sunday, with the goal of "recognizing some of the greatest small to mid-sized brewers in our own backyard."
