5-Alarm Fire In Bushwick, Brooklyn Leaves 2 Dead

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 5-alarm fire in Brooklyn on Friday night left two people dead.

The blaze started at a three-story building on Covert Street in Bushwick around 9 p.m.  Firefighters struggled to knock down the flames, which quickly spread to a second building.

The fire was brought under control around 10:30 p.m.

"It was very bright colored.  I felt the heat all the way across the street, right in front of my eyes.  I mean, the heat was just so intense.  The house just started deteriorating and breaking down on its own," witness  Richard Nelson told CBS 2's Derricke Dennis.

Dennis reported that a 43-year-old man was among the dead.

One other person was also said to be injured in the fire.  Two firefighters were also hurt battling the blaze in the five-unit apartment.

Officials have not yet determined the cause of the blaze.
