45 Years In Prison For Irvington Woman Who Killed 88-Year-Old Woman
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An Irvington, N.J., woman has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the 2011 murder of an 88-year-old woman.
Yvonne Walker was sentenced Wednesday by Essex County Judge Peter J. Vazquez. She must serve at least 38 years of her sentence before she will be eligible for parole, according to a news release from the Essex County Prosecutor's office.
Walker stabbed Casetta Blunt 11 times on June 16, 2011, prosecutors said.
Walker regularly came to Blunt's Campfield Street home to do odd jobs in exchange for cash.
Prosecutors said the stabbing stemmed from an argument over $40.
In addition to stabbing Blunt, Walker also hit her with a brick and stole jewelry from her home.
"Ms. Blunt was a peaceful, kindhearted woman who was just trying to help the defendant earn some extra cash. Her kindness was repaid with a vicious and senseless stabbing in the place where Ms. Blunt lived for more than 30 years. She was entitled to die peacefully in our own time,'' Assistant Prosecutor Justin Edwab said in the release.
In a videotaped interview, Walker said Blunt struck her with her cane, causing her to become so angered that she "blacked out'' and stabbed the victim with a kitchen knife, prosecutors said.
