Driver Arrested After Alleged False Threat Shuts Down Outbound Holland Tunnel
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A driver was in police custody early Tuesday evening, after he told police he was threatened by another driver and passengers inside the Holland Tunnel -- but police said the threat turned out to be false.
Around 5:15 p.m., the 38-year-old driver told Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police that he had been threatened by another motorist, and the passengers in that motorist's car, inside the tunnel.
But police later concluded that the threat was false, police said.
The man who called police was himself arrested after officers found that he was driving on a suspended license, police said.
The outbound tunnel was shut down to all traffic for a period of time shortly before 5 p.m. as police investigated. The tunnel later reopened, but delays were mounting to almost an hour by 5 p.m., Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2.
The Port Authority later took four men into custody, and they were seen sitting on the curb in handcuffs on the sidewalk. It was not immediately clear why they were being detained or who they were in relation to the incident.
