Condition Improves For 1 Student In Fatal South Jersey School Bus Crash
CHESTERFIELD, NJ (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Three New Jersey school children remain hospitalized with serious injuries in the aftermath of a bus crash that killed the sister of two of them.
A spokeswoman for Cooper University Hospital in Camden says 11-year-olds Sophie Tezsla and Jonathan Zdybel remain in critical condition.
The condition of Natalie Tezsla, also 11, was upgraded Friday to stable.
They were injured Thursday in a crash that killed Sophie and Natalie's triplet sister, Isabelle. All were students at Chesterfield Elementary School.
Chesterfield Township police say a school bus carrying 25 Chesterfield Elementary students was on its way to the school Thursday morning when a dump truck hit the driver's side rear of the bus at an intersection. The impact then sent the bus crashing into a pole.
A candlelight vigil was held Thursday night in Chesterfield to remember Isabelle. Seventeen other students on the bus were also hurt.
"Our entire school family is sadly grieving the loss of one of our students as a result of the accident," Schools superintendent Ellen McHenry said in a statement on the school's website.
She says grief counselors will be at the school on Friday.
"Additional counselors from other schools within the district and the county have offered their services to assist the Chesterfield Elementary School family for as long as it is needed," McHenry said.
Police are investigating the wreck but so far, no charges have been filed.
