One Killed, Two Wounded In Newark IHOP Restaurant Shooting
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- One person is dead and two others have been listed as critical following a shooting at an International House of Pancakes restaurant in Newark early Saturday.
As 1010 WINS' Gene Michaels reported, the shooting happened around 3 a.m. Saturday at the IHOP at 109 Bergen St., right across from the University Hospital.
Papa Khaly Diaye, 30, of Middlesex was pronounced dead late Saturday night, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.
Three Hurt In Newark IHOP Restaurant Shooting
Michaels was told a fight broke out, and the manager tried to escort the people involved outside. That was when the shooting started.
Ndiaye, the manager of the restaurant, and the other two victims were rushed across the street to University Hospital.
One man, Jermaine, pulled into the parking lot for the IHOP on Saturday afternoon, only to find it closed. He was not surprised about the incident.
"I'm not surprised that something would happen at 3 o'clock in the morning, because after 3, that's when all the clubs are closing; everybody comes here to eat," he said.
He said some of the people coming in from the clubs can get rowdy and impatient – and that doesn't only happen at the Bergen Street IHOP.
"They probably go to the one on Spring Street, but then last Sunday, there was a fight in there too – hitting people in the head with chairs," he said.
The Rev. Tom Ellis, a community activist who heads the Enough Is Enough Coalition anti-violence group, said more attention needs to be paid to violence in Newark.
"I am surprised that the mayor is not standing here this morning, and a lot of other people," he said. "They need to be standing here to help to send a message that we're not going to tolerate the violence in this city."
One victim remains in stable condition, another was treated for his wounds and released.
A sign in the window said the IHOP will reopen Sunday.
Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor's office continued an investigation into the shooting late Saturday morning.
