3 Long Island Beaches Closed Due To High Bacteria
BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Three Long Island beaches are closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels.
Suffolk County health officials say Saturday they're closing Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore, Sayville Marine Park Beach and Bayport Beach until further notice.
County Health Commissioner James Tomarken says swimming in contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
All other county beaches remain open.
Earlier this week, an advisory against swimming was issued for 66 beaches in Suffolk County because of the potential for bacteria from runoff following heavy rain and flooding.
