3-Foot Python Found Under Couch Cushion In Long Island Apartment

HOLBROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- One might expect to find coins and crumbs while cleaning out the inside of an old couch, but one Long Island couple ran into something far less mundane on Monday.

Peter Wang and his wife were cleaning out a basement apartment in the Pond Path complex in Holbrook that had recently been vacated, when wife removed a couch cushion and found a 3-foot python, according to the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Wang called the Town of Brookhaven Holtsville Ecology Center, which notified the SPCA. The agency sent officers to the scene.

The SPCA said the non-venomous Ball Python belonged to a former tenant and was going to be cared for by an upstairs tenant when it got loose.

Ball Pythons are legal to own, Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross said.

No charges have been filed.
