Power Restored To All Customers In Northern New Jersey
EDGEWATER, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Power has been restored to thousands of PSE&G customers who were briefly in the dark Thursday evening.
About 24,000 customers in northeast Hudson County and southeast Bergen County had lost power around 5 p.m. after there was a failure at the Bergen switching station in Ridgefield, interrupting service to four substations, the utility said.
"We are having a failure there," PSE&G spokeswoman Christine Lloyd told WCBS 880 while power was still out. "We're not exactly sure what the cause is at this stage. When something like this happens, really, our first priority is restoring customers as quickly as possible. So that's what we're working on right now."
Towns reporting power outages include Fairview, Edgewater, Cliffside Park, North Bergen and surrounding areas.
Twenty thousand customers were without power for an hour and 15 minutes. Four thousand were in the dark for about 1 1/2 hours, 1010 WINS reported.
Television station aerial shots are showing wide swaths of the area in the dark, and power lines that caught fire in Palisades Park.
Traffic lights were affected, creating problems for drivers in the area at rush hour.
The area handles a large volume of bridge-bound traffic.
