2/4 CBS2 Wednesday Evening Weather Headlines

By Giorgio Panetta, CBS2 Chief Meteorologist/Weather Producer

Hello everyone,

We got close to 40 degrees today here in New York City, and it felt nice. But an interesting, yet very common weather occurrence took place.

A slight inversion layer occurred over northern New Jersey and southern New York. This capped out temps just below 40 degrees to the north. But just south of the layer -- say below Staten Island -- temps soared to almost 50 degrees! Just goes to show the power of the sun.

Tonight, a weak front approaches the area, putting some snow on the ground by the morning commute. See the map for totals depending on where you live. But the general trend is maybe two inches in those spots that see training snow.

Then, the arctic front passes and temps plunge. Friday morning is potentially the coldest air of the season.

Saturday is better, with some flurries in the afternoon, but mostly dry, and Sunday could start an extended period of light to moderate snow -- possibly lingering until Tuesday, but it's just too early for projected snowfall totals.

Check back in soon for the latest.
