2,351 Dancers Perform 'Hokey Pokey' In Poughkeepsie To Break Guinness World Record
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - The instructions at a pedestrian bridge in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., today included telling thousands of people to put their left foot in, their left foot out and shake it all about.
The non-profit group that runs the Walkway Over the Hudson said it broke the Guinness World Record of 2,351 dancers performing the "Hokey Pokey" nonstop for at least five minutes. The previous record was set by dancing schoolchildren in Estonia.
Walkway Over the Hudson executive director Elizabeth Hart said that 2,569 people stretched along the bridge this morning. She said you could look a half-mile to the east and to the west and see everybody's hands shaking at the same time and their feet sticking out.
Hart said that a local artist produced a song that was exactly the time limit they needed and was simple enough for the thousands of people dancing to follow. Dancers listened to the song on the radio.
