2016 Met Gala Explores Intersection Of Manmade, Machine-Made Fashion
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- High fashion and entertainment collided Monday evening at what some call the city's the biggest party of the year.
As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, the annual Met Gala was being held Monday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.
Some of the stars at the gala displayed classic looks – like Misty Copeland – while others went over the top, like Lady Gaga with her flashy blazer and tight lower garment, and Rita Ora with her silver feathers.
Beyoncé arrived last, and noticeably alone in a stunning latex gown. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West appeared in matching sequin ensembles and Zoe Saldana in a dramatic gown.
The fundraiser marked the opening of the institute's annual fashion exhibit. The theme this year -- Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" -- shows how fashion designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde items that are ready to wear.
The stars were all dressed in accordance with the theme.
"I think this is a very poetic, emotional exhibition," said Vogue Magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. "There's something very peaceful and romantic about it when you walk through the galleries. You really focus on the costumes and the craft and the hand work."
Wintour serves as co-chair of the gala along with Taylor Swift.

"I think tonight is really about craftsmanship and artistry, and the details," said model Kate Bosworth.
The men stepped up their style to keep up with the women.
"I'm just sort of soaking it in," said Yankees legend Derek Jeter. "Like I said, I'm out of my element. So I'm just here to have a good time."
Attending for the fourth time Monday was "Late Late Show" host James Corden – famous for his "Carpool Karaoke." But Corden and his wife, Julia, did not sing on the way to the event.
"We basically sat in silence. We called our children and we spoke to them, and it was beautiful," Corden said.
This was the 70th year of the annual event, also known as the Met Ball. It has been held every year since 1946 on the first Monday of May.
Tickets for the event cost $25,000.
