Lockdown On 2 Yonkers Schools Lifted After Barricade Situation
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Two schools in Yonkers were placed on lockdown Thursday morning after police got a call that a man armed with a gun had barricaded himself inside a home nearby.
It started around 8:15 a.m. Thursday at a house near the corner of Rugby and Remsen roads.
"We received a call of a distraught male with a handgun in the area," spokesman Detective Lt. Patrick McCormack told CBS 2's Lou Young. "We immediately responded to that location. At that point, the male was inside of the residence."
Several police vehicles, including an armored truck, responded to the scene as well as a hostage negotiator, McCormack said.
"Anytime that we respond to a location where there are weapons, a male with unknown circumstances, we treat it as if there were hostages," he said. "At this time, we feel there were no hostages."
Neighbors described the hours-long standoff as a tense situation.
"It's scary when it's right in your neighborhood," said resident Enza Addio.
"It's pretty scary. You're letting your dogs out and people are screaming at you to get in your house," another resident said. "it's not fun first thing in the morning."
Around 10:30 a.m., police entered the home and found the man with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, McCormack said. A handgun and two rifles were also found inside, police said.
The man, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital.
Two nearby schools, Public School 29 and Family School 32, were briefly under lockdown as a precaution. The lockdowns were lifted by about 11 a.m., according to a school district spokesperson.
The investigation is ongoing.
