Death Of East Harlem Boy, 2, Reclassified As Homicide

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The death of a 2-year-old boy back in March has been reclassified as a homicide, police said Wednesday.

Rashid Washington was found unconscious and unresponsive in his home on East 126th Street near Lexington Avenue just before 11 a.m. Friday, March 20, police said.

Rashid was rushed to Harlem Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

On Wednesday, the New York City Medical Examiner's office reclassified his death as a homicide, police said.

Police did not provide further details. But the New York Daily News reported that Rashid's mother told police she heard the boy get up early to use the bathroom and heard him fall to the floor. She told police she put in back in bed and later in the morning, she noticed he was not breathing, the newspaper reported.

Doctors told police they found bruising to the boy's liver and spleen and blood in the abdomen, but suggested that the injuries could have resulted from CPR, the newspaper reported.

As of late Wednesday, there were no arrests and the investigation continued, police said.
