2 Robbery Suspects Shot, Wounded By Correction Officer In Newark
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An Essex County correction officer shot and wounded two teens who allegedly tried to rob him in Newark early Monday, authorities said.
The officer was visiting friends at Bergen Street and Pomona Avenue in Newark around 2:30 a.m., when the two armed young men came up and tried to rob him, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
The officer and the alleged would-be robbers exchanged gunfire, and both of the suspects were wounded, prosecutors said.
One of the suspects – Kyle Cross, 19, of Newark – was in critical, but stable, condition at University Hospital in Newark, prosecutors said. The other suspect – a 16-year-old Newark boy whose name was not released due to his age – was in stable condition at the same hospital, prosecutors said.
Both suspects were under police guard at the hospital and were set to be charged with weapons and robbery offenses, prosecutors said.
The officer was treated and released from the hospital with unspecified trauma, prosecutors said.
