He said one was seriously injured, while the other's injuries were not serious.
NJ Advance Media reported that the driver, a woman, was being questioned.
The Cliffside Park lieutenant said he had no further details, but added: ``It's a little bit rough for us right now.''
As 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported, Donna Spoto said she was worried about the two young officers, who were struck while talking to another driver about driving down the street with no headlights.
Spoto is a Cliffside Park councilwoman and a teacher, and she taught both of the officers.
"It's stunning, and of course, it's horrible when it hits close to home," Spoto said. "I know that people say, everybody says that all the time. But it is. I mean, I'm very shook up and saddened."
The accident happened the same day as thousands of police from across the country attended the funeral in Queens for Rafael Ramos, one of two NYPD shot execution-style by a man as they were sitting in their patrol car last week. The man then committed suicide.
