2 Men Struck, Killed By Cars In Separate Sunday Morning Accidents
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two men were struck and killed by vehicles in separate accidents in Manhattan and the Bronx Sunday morning.
The first accident happened around 7 a.m., along the Bruckner Expressway near 138th Street in the Bronx.
A 1996 green Toyota Camry was broken down in the right lane of the expressway, and two of the three got out to determine what had happened when a 2010 gray Honda slammed into the rear of the disabled car, police said.
The Honda caused the disabled Toyota to hit both occupants standing outside the vehicle. One of them – Saleh Abubakar, 47, of Brooklyn -- was pronounced dead at the scene after he was thrown over the railing and ended up on the lower roadway, police said.
The second person who was struck was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was reported in critical condition with head trauma, police said.
The driver of the Honda remained at the scene, and was taken along with the third person in the Toyota to Jacobi Medical Center with minor injuries, police said.
As of late Sunday afternoon, there were no arrests in the case and the investigation continued.
The second accident happened around 10 a.m. on St. Nicholas Avenue between 131st and 132nd streets, in Harlem.
Willie Zachary, 65, was trying to cross St. Nicholas Avenue from west to east when he was struck by a gray 2009 Honda, police said.
Zachary, of Harlem, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained at the scene of the accident, police said.
The investigation into the second accident was also ongoing late Sunday afternoon.
