When firefighters arrived, authorities said they were met by mounds of debris, boxes and garbage inside the house.

The fire was contained to the basement, but heavy smoke had already filled the home. Suffolk County Detective Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said the cluttered hallways were impassable and hindered rescue efforts.

"Fire department personnel entered the home, removed two female victims. A male had self-evacuated. All three were transported to Huntington Hospital where both women were pronounced dead," Fitzpatrick said.

Killed were 64-year-old Reyna Paris and her daughter, 29-year-old Rosemarie Martinez, who had Down syndrome. Paris' son, 26-year-old Joseph Martinez, was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
