2 Brush Fires Break Out In Suffolk County
BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Two brush fires broke out in Suffolk County Sunday, and firefighters encountered difficulty from the wind as they battled the flames in one blaze.
One fire broke out in a large mulch pile just after 11 a.m., at 45 S. 4th St. in Brentwood near Custom Earth Properties, according to Suffolk County Fire Control.
The wind made for tough times for firefighters working to extinguish the fire. Smoke blew across the Sagtikos State Parkway, but no lane closures were reported.
One firefighter battling the blaze was taken to North Shore-LIJ Health System Southside Hospital in Bayshore with minor injuries, officials said.
The fire was under control and contained by 1:40 p.m., but remained "very active," officials said.
A second smaller brush fire broke out in Middle Island and was under control within a short time.
A major brush fire also broke out Sunday in Old Bridge Township, N.J. That blaze forced the evacuation of homes near Washington Avenue and Joseph Court, but no injuries were reported.
