18-Year-Old Woman Struck By Lightning At Picnic In East Islip
EAST ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An 18-year-old Long Island woman is in the hospital after being struck by lightning over the weekend.
Nicole Burke, of East Patchogue, was attending a picnic at Heckscher State Park in East Islip on Sunday when an unexpected lightning storm broke out.
Burke was at Parking Field 6 when she was struck by lightning around 6 p.m., New York State Park Police Captain Bruce Marx told WCBS 880.
The lightning struck Burke in the head and exited through her arm, Marx said. She was rushed to the burn unit at Stonybrook University Medical Center, and is said to be in good condition.
The severe thunderstorms that ripped through Suffolk County on Sunday packed powerful winds that also knocked down trees and wires and damaged a home in West Sayville.
