14 People Hurt In Bronx Apartment Fire; More Than 100 Firefighters Respond
THE BRONX, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) More than a dozen people were hurt in a fire that tore through a Bronx apartment building.
It happened just after 3 a.m. Saturday.
More than 100 firefighters responded to a fire on the second floor of a three-story building on West 167th Street in the Highbridge Section.
It took FDNY crews more than two hours to get the fire under control.
Apartments were damaged and a deli on the first floor was destroyed.
"I woke up smelling burning plastic. I looked out my side window and saw the fire trucks all along this block and up the block. I came outside and filmed video. This whole thing was on fire," Highbridge resident Jemal McMahon said.
Residents say the same building has caught fire before, even on the Fourth of July.
At least two firefighters and four other people were taken to the hospital, but everyone is expected to be OK.
