"It stood, not a window broken, not a stone dislodged," said Jay Chester Johnson of the Upper East Side in a poem he wrote after months of helping first responders there following the attacks. "If there is a place in the universe where life was rejuvenated as a result of the caring and the loving and the aftermath of something so destructive, it's here."

Among those he helped was EMT Jack Carlson.
"You came here, you knew everything was going to be okay," Carlson told WCBS 880 reporter Marla Diamond.
"There was a lot of comfort without words... You show up. That was the feeling," said Barbara Cohen, who helped counsel the workers for six months after the attacks.
She was drawn to this church - the little chapel that stood.
"It was meant to be and a symbol of something good is left in the world during this terrible time," she said.
While the church was undamaged, many items were crammed into the church's wrought iron gate after 9/11. Those items, which included a construction worker's boot, a Mass card, and flags of many nations, have been brought inside.
"They left their hearts here," Johnson said.
