1010 WINS Visionary Awards Honors NYC Leaders
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Some people change the way business is done, some engage communities to change lives, and some change the world. They are the Visionaries among us and they see the unseen, reject the nay-sayers, and create new paths for others to follow.
1010 WINS proudly honored eight extraordinary individuals Tuesday evening who see the future with imagination, creativity, and unparalleled leadership.
Here's more about some of them and why they were chosen:
The 1010 WINS 2017 Visionary Hall of Fame includes a diverse group of leaders from the Greater New York area. They come from different backgrounds and work in different specialties but they share a common bond. Each Visionary confronted a major challenge head-on. They followed their hearts and listened to their inner voice no matter how loud the objections grew.
1010 WINS Visionary Hall of Fame inductee Joseph McNeil was a freshman in college when he and three of his friends sat down at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter to challenge the store's policy that denied service to non-whites. In the process, he stirred the nation and sparked sit-ins across America. Woolworth's changed its policy and civil rights for blacks took a giant leap forward.
Neil Armstrong took a giant leap for mankind but it was 1010 WINS Visionary Hall of Fame inductee Marion Johnson who helped make those words possible. Ms. Johnson was a 'Hidden Figure,' part of the engineering team that figured out how to land the Apollo 11 command module on the surface of the moon.
Here on earth, 1010 WINS Visionary Hall of Fame inductee Jane Rosenthal answered the call after September 11, 2001. Ms. Rosenthal saw her city and its people desperately trying to find its way back from the terror attacks.
She, along with actor Robert De Niro, co-founded the TriBeCa Film Festival, using art and film to tap into the pre-9/11 vitality and pride of the Tribeca neighborhood. Today the Festival is part of the fabric of the city, drawing some three million people and generating more than a half a billion dollars every year.
There is one man who knows single-handedly what that kind of money is like. The 1010 WINS Visionary Hall of Fame Lifetime Award belongs to Michael Bloomberg. The former mayor of New York City and founder of Bloomberg L.P. blazed a visionary trail from his earliest days.
He built a business plan that put high-quality business information into the hands of the financial community, harnessing technology to get it their faster than ever. His vision though did not stop in the business arena. Bloomberg Philanthropies funds projects around the globe that help the arts, the environment, public health, government innovation, and education.
The honorees for the 1010 WINS Visionary Hall of Fame were chosen through a highly selective process and represent the best qualities of leadership: Passion, Leadership, Courage, Strength, and the ability to inspire.
