1010 WINS 9/11 Series: Manhattan Mother Recounts Frantic Search For Daughter
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It is a story that played itself out for many New Yorkers on Sept. 11, 2001 -- being separated from a loved one during the attacks on the World Trade Center and not knowing whether you would ever see them again.
That scenario was the worst fear of one mother after the two airplanes struck the Twin Towers.
The woman, who wanted to remain anonymous for this report, worked at the Manhattan Municipal Building while her 5-year-old daughter was in a school only a few blocks away.
"We felt it here. The building here actually shook, like a lot. Then I heard a woman across the hall in the office started to scream -- a horrific scream," she told 1010 WINS' Stan Brooks.

It wasn't long before she discovered that terrorists had hijacked several planes and attacked the New York City icon.
"That's when I saw the big hole and the fire, things that were flying all over the place and I just started to panic," she said, adding she also immediately began to fear for her daughter's safety.
The woman began asking herself if there were more targets across New York City.
"I thought 'are they going to hit all the main New York City places?'" she said.
After "getting very nervous," the woman frantically raced to find her daughter, who was a few blocks away.
"I just wanted to find my way and I was lost and then the usual way I went they closed it off, kind of trying to find another way and I just started to run, got lost again and eventually I found my way to the school," she said.
When she got to her daughter, there was a tearful reunion. The little girl was very calm and asked "Mommy, why are you crying?"
