"Nationally each year, 5,000 teens are killed in motor vehicle accidents. In Nassau County last year, sadly four teens were killed," said Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said that, nationally, 14 teenagers die in auto accidents every day.

Dale cited alcohol, speeding, and distractions as primary causes for teen auto accidents.

County officials held a public event next to a crashed car on Wednesday to drive home the point.

"Don't drive if you can't drive... A lot of teenagers drive when they're emotional. It's, like, not good. It's dangerous," Bethpage High School senior Melissa Tadio told Xirinachs on Thursday. "So just, I guess, just be smart."
