1 Dead, 5 Wounded In New Haven Strip Club Shooting
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was killed, and five other people were injured, in a shooting early Saturday at a strip club in New Haven, Conn.
Just after 3:30 a.m., shots rang out at the Key Club Cabaret at Hamilton and St. John streets in New Haven, CBS Connecticut reported.
The shots came from within the club and the first officer on scene reported about 100 patrons running out of the strip club's main entrance, CBS Connecticut reported.
The victims were in the after-hours area of the club when the shooting happened, according to the Hartford Courant.
Police found drug paraphernalia and packaging littered around the club, the newspaper reported.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman released a statement following the shooting.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the woman who died as a result of her injuries, the victims who are fighting for their lives, and all who are impacted by this senseless violence," the statement said. "This is a tragic reminder that despite progress in recent years, Connecticut cities still suffer too often from the plague of gun violence. On the state, municipal, and community levels, Connecticut must continue to work together to make all our communities safer."
Malloy also attended a news conference on the shooting with New Haven police Saturday afternoon. He said the woman who was killed was not among the intended targets.
Malloy said another victim remained in critical condition Saturday afternoon, and others suffered gunshot wounds but have been released.
The Key Club Cabaret is a strip club with locations in New Haven and in the Bronx.
There were no arrests in the shooting as of early Saturday afternoon, but Malloy said that may soon change.
"This was inside an after-hours club. As a result, we know pretty much everything that happened. It was captured on tape," he said. "We know who the perpetrator was, and it is our earnest hope that we'll be making an arrest very quickly."
