Funeral held for NYPD Officer Adeed Fayaz, shot to death in Facebook Marketplace robbery
NEW YORK -- NYPD Officer Adeed Fayaz was laid to rest Thursday with a viewing and funeral service in Brooklyn.
The 26-year-old was fatally shot while off duty last weekend in East New York, Brooklyn.
Police said Fayaz and his brother-in-law met up with suspect Randy Jones to buy a car Jones had advertised on Facebook Marketplace.
Jones, 38, allegedly pulled out a gun and tried to rob them before shooting the officer in the head.
Fayaz succumbed to his injuries Tuesday afternoon, a day after Jones was taken into custody at a Rockland County motel.
Police said Jones was arrested using Fayaz's own handcuffs. He now faces murder and attempted robbery charges.
Fayaz had been with the department for five years and leaves behind a wife and two young children.
Officer Adeed Fayaz remembered as wonderful father, husband, man of service
There was a tribute Thursday to a fallen hero as thousands of fellow officers, family and friends said a final goodbye to Officer Adeed Fayaz.
The officer is being remembered as a wonderful father and husband, and a man of service.
The mournful cries of a mother pierced the silence on Coney Island Avenue as a devastated family said goodbye to a son, a husband, a father of two, a hero.
Thousands of officers gathered in grief as Fayaz's flag-draped casket passed outside the Makki Mosque in Midwood.
Fayaz's life was just beginning, an embodiment of the American dream, a young man aspiring to make a great life for his family.
"Born in Pakistan, Adeed Fayaz came to this country at the age of 5. Came to the decision to be a police officer in middle school," NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said.
The police commissioner says Fayaz was a dedicated officer, up for a promotion, but Saturday night while off-duty and with his brother-in-law, he went to buy a car in East New York. Fayaz walked into a set-up and was shot dead in attempted robbery. Police later arrested a suspect.
"He had to, you know, fight for his brother's life and also defend his own," friend Nader Ahmed said.
His high school friend said he spoke to Fayaz hours before he was attacked.
"He actually called me the day of. It was really sad. He was wishing me happy birthday, and then three hours later it happened," Ahmed said.
"Today I stand with all the members of my blue blood families," Fayaz's aunt said during the service.
She had a message for Mayor Eric Adams.
"My request to you is to make the city as easy to live as it was a few years back," she said.
The mayor promised the Fayaz family the city would show its support.
"To the family, our hearts are broken, but our arms are strong. We will hold you and lift you up and show you that your son, your husband, did not die in vain," he said.
Moment of silence at Islanders game
The New York Islanders paid tribute to Officer Adeed Fayaz before Thursday night's game.
His picture flashed on the screen above the rink at UBS Arena and a moment of silence was held for the Deer Park resident.
Family: Serving in NYPD was Officer Adeed Fayaz's lifelong dream
A funeral was held Thursday for a 26-year-old NYPD officer who was shot and killed while off duty last weekend in Brooklyn.
Family spoke at the service in Midwood about Officer Adeed Fayaz's lifelong dream to serve as a member of the department.
Prayers could be heard ringing through the streets as officers lined up by the hundreds outside of the Makki Mosque on Coney Island Avenue to say goodbye to one of their own.
There was deep sorrow as Fayaz's flag-draped casket was escorted by officers, followed by his wife and two children, and the city's top leaders, including Mayor Eric Adams.
"We lost a brother officer to a senseless act of violence," Adams said.
NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said Fayaz, a five-year veteran of the force, was in line for a promotion.
"He learned and studied with passion, was well on his way to make sergeant," Sewell said.
Last weekend, Fayaz was off duty when he went to East New York with his brother-in-law to buy a car he had found on Facebook Marketplace. However, authorities say it was a setup. When he arrived, the seller pulled out a gun and tried to rob him. Fayaz was shot in the head. His brother-in-law survived.
"Had to fight for his brother's life, and defend his own," friend Nader Ahmed said.
Ahmed, who went to high school with the fallen officer, said he spoke to Fayaz hours before he was attacked.
"He actually called me the day of. Really sad, wishing me a happy birthday. Three hours later it happened. It's absolutely sad for his family and children, mostly," Ahmed said.
Ahmed said Fayaz bought and sold cars as a hobby.
"I went with him last time he got a car. He was doing it as a side gig to make extra money," Ahmed said.
The suspected gunman, 38-year-old Randy Jones, was arrested two days after the shooting and charged with first-degree murder and attempted robbery.
Fayaz's father pleaded with leaders to put a stop to the senseless violence.
"United States of America, we have to stop this gun violence," he said.
Fayaz's family said he died a "shaheed," a Muslim martyr, defending his community. His friends remember him as a man who served, spoke five languages, loved cricket and handball, and most of all was a wonderful father and husband.
His wife was presented with the American flag for his service and a promise that Fayaz's death will not be in vain.

"He's a very good kid, standup guy, humble guy"
Family, friends and the city are saying their final goodbyes to an NYPD officer taken far too soon.
A funeral service is set for late Thursday morning for Officer Adeed Fayaz, who was shot and killed earlier this week in a botched robbery.
There's just no other way to put it, other than to say it's a sad day.
CBS2 spoke with people who live in the Midwood section of Brooklyn who wanted to pay their respects to Fayaz's family. They had nothing but positive remarks about him, including the fact he was a hard worker and always wanted to do right by his family.
A five-year veteran of the department -- a husband and a father of two young kids -- is now gone, but not forgotten.
On Thursday morning, thousands of people, including many officers, filled the streets of Coney Island Avenue in front of the Makki Mosque, where Fayaz's life was being remembered.
"It's just sad to hear that 26 years old, his life had just begin. He has two kids, unfortunate for the family," Midwood resident Malik Anwar said.
Anwar said he met Fayaz a few months ago in passing in the neighborhood, adding it was a brief exchange but the officer's friendly personality is what resonated.
"He's a very good kid, standup guy, humble guy," Anwar said.
Those kinds of positive remarks were prominent as people honored Fayaz's life. He was a young man who some said gave his life to family and this Brooklyn community.
"It touched my heart because he's a young guy, with his wife and his kids he leaves behind. I feel so sad for them," a woman named Mirella said. "I'm here to support them."
Officer Fayaz's life was taken after police say 38-year-old Randy Jones shot him last weekend during what was supposed to be a potential car sale in East New York. Fayaz was off duty at the time.
It was a setup, according to police.
Jones faced a judge in court Wednesday and is now charged with first-degree murder. If convicted, a full life sentence is what he could be looking at.
Hearts are heavy, but this Pakistani and Muslim community are coming together and with open arms. It plans to help the family out during this difficult time.

Over the weekend, the 26-year-old officer was off duty when police say he was lured to his death by 38-year-old Randy Jones. They say Jones advertised a car for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Fayaz and his brother-in-law went to meet Jones in East New York, and that's when he was fatally shot.
The suspect was arranged Wednesday, as nearly 100 officers packed the courtroom and watched the judge read the charges. Jones now faces first-degree murder and, if convicted, he could be behind bars for life.
"I don't have the words to say. It's just extremely sad. You can only wish good in the future for them, because these things shouldn't be happening," Mordechai Cohen said.
"Very nice guy, very sad. His small baby, his wife, his family," said Malik Ahmed.
Officers also grieving the loss of one of their own lined up by the thousands to witness a somber and dignified transfer of the body in preparation for today's funeral. It started at the medical examiner's office in Manhattan, then down the FDR Drive and into Brooklyn.
Also on Wednesday, memorial bunting was placed at the 66th Precinct where Fayaz worked.
He had been on the force for five years, and many say he gave his all to this Brooklyn community and his family.

Suspect Randy Jones charged with first-degree murder
NYPD Officer Adeed Fayaz died Tuesday night, days after being shot during an attempted robbery.
His accused killer faced upgraded charges at criminal court in downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday morning.
The suspect, 38-year-old Randy Jones, is being charged with first-degree murder. If he's convicted, he could face life behind bars.
There was a rather tense moment as nearly 100 officers filled the courtroom and watched as the alleged gunman listened to the charges being brought against him.
Investigators believe he lured 26-year-old Fayaz, who was off duty at the time, to his death over the weekend using a car add on the internet.
Police said Fayaz and his brother-in-law went to East New York, Brooklyn, to meet someone selling a Honda Odyssey on Facebook Marketplace.
But investigators say it was all a setup.
The officer was shot before his brother-in-law fired back at the gunman at least six times.
The family is heartbroken.
"They're devastated. One day, their son, their husband, their father, is there smiling, laughing. The next day, he's carried into this hospital," Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said.
Fellow officers are also grieving. Over at the 66th Precinct, where Fayaz worked, bunting is being put up to memorialize the beloved officer.
There is no word yet on when his funeral will take place.
Late Wednesday morning, Jones' attorney, who works for the Legal Aid Society, said in a statement, "Defense counsel is still awaiting initial discovery from the district attorney's office, and we have not yet received any evidence linking Mr. Jones to the offense. We will have more to say about this case in the coming days, weeks and months after a thorough review and investigation."

"The male then asked jokingly, 'Are youse guys carrying a gun?' Both men responded no. At this time, our perpetrator grabs our MOS in a headlock, points the gun at his head and demands the money," NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said.
A struggle ensued. Police say the man shot Fayaz in his head, then went on the run.
"He fled, but he could not evade our reach," NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said.
Within 46 hours, police tracked down Randy Jones in a Rockland County motel where he was staying with his girlfriend and five kids.
Police took the suspect into custody using Fayaz's own handcuffs.
"We wanted him to know who, who he-- what he did to that officer and that officer's cuffs were on him, and I think it sends a powerful message," Essig said.
Tuesday night, the 38-year-old suspect had to pass rows of stone-faced officers as he was walked out of the 75th Precinct.

NYPD: Suspect has at least 3 prior arrests, including one for strangulation
Charges are pending against the man accused of shooting an off-duty NYPD officer. The botched robbery attempt took place in East New York, critically injuring 26-year-old Adeed Fayez.
On Monday night, detectives brought the suspect in using the officer's own handcuffs.
Police say the suspect, Randy Jones, refused to answer any questions, demanding a lawyer immediately following his arrest. He is expected to be charged with attempted murder.
After an exhaustive 46-hour manhunt, police arrested Jones at a Days Inn in the Rockland County town of Nanuet and led him out of the motel to the 75th Precinct using the wounded officer's own handcuffs.
"We wanted him to know what he did to that officer, and that officer's cuffs were on him and I think that sends a powerful message," NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said.
Police say Fayez was off-duty and responding to an ad on Facebook Marketplace for a $24,000 Honda Pilot on Saturday night. However, when he and his brother-in-law arrived at the meeting place in East New York, they realized it was a setup.
"The male then asked jokingly 'Are you guys carrying a gun?' Both men responded, "No." At this time, our perpetrator grabs our MOS in a headlock, points the gun at his head, and demands the money," Essig said.

A solemn Sewell said the officer remains in grave condition.
"New Yorkers, we are in this together. The victim in this case is an NYPD officer. We will relentlessly pursue anyone who carries an illegal fire arm or shoots someone in this city," Sewell said.

Investigators say Jones lured off-duty officer Ayeed Fayez to East New York Saturday under the false pretense of selling him a Honda Pilot he posted to Facebook Marketplace. When Officer Fayez and his brother-in-law showed up, Jones allegedly asked jokingly if they had a gun.
"Both men responded 'no.' At this time, our perpetrator put our MOS in a headlock, points the gun at his head and the demands the money. Our officer states he doesn't have the money. At which time, our perpetrator points the gun at the brother-in-law," said NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig.
Police say Officer Fayez was able break free but the suspect shot him in the head, continuing to fire as he ran away.
"The officer's brother-in-law removes the firearm from his brother's hip and returns fire at least six times. He then jumps into a black auto and speeds off," Essig said.
Police identified the suspect's car through dash cam from the brother-in-law's car. They eventually tracked Jones to Rockland County, where he was hiding with his girlfriend and five children.
Detectives arrested him using Officer Fayez's own handcuffs, as he remains in grave condition at Brookdale hospital, fighting for his life.
"We wanted him to know what he did to that officer, and that officer's cuffs were on him. I think it sends a powerful message," Essig said.
Charges are pending against Jones as investigators wait to serve two search warrants. He is expected to face attempted murder.

The system has already failed too many victims. It must not fail our brother and his family."

NYPD releases new information
Police identified the suspect in custody as 38-year-old Randy Jones, of Brooklyn. Charges against him are still pending.
Investigators say Officer Adeed Fayaz arranged to buy a Honda Pilot through Facebook Marketplace for $24,000. Fayaz and his brother-in-law met up with Jones around 6:50 p.m. Saturday on Ruby Street in East New York.
Police say the suspect jokingly asked Fayaz and his brother-in-law if either of them were carrying a gun. When they said no, Jones allegedly pulled out a gun, put Fayaz in a head lock and demanded the money.
The suspect then pointed the gun at the brother-in-law, and Fayaz was able to break free, police say.
Police say that's when Jones shot Fayaz in the head.
His brother-in-law then grabbed his gun and returned fire six times.
Police say Jones took off in a black car, which they tracked to identify and eventually locate him.
He was taken into custody at a hotel in Nanuet, where he was staying with his girlfriend and five children, ages 6 months to 11 years old.
Jones has three prior arrests, including from 2014 in New York City.
Charges pending as questioning of suspect continues at 75th Precinct
There have been new developments in the shooting of an off-duty NYPD officer.
As the 26-year-old officer remains in critical condition, a suspect was taken into custody on Monday night.
Officers continued to show up throughout the day and night at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn to offer their support to the five-year veteran of the force, who was shot in the head over the weekend.
Up in the Rockland County town of Nanuet, a man wanted in connection with the Saturday night shooting was taken into custody at a hotel.
Not much is known about the suspect, but CBS2 has learned charges are pending, as questioning continues at the 75th Precinct.
All of this stems from a botched robbery.
"Everyone around the world, you need to keep this officer in your prayers. He goes out there every day making sure you guys are safe," said Dep. Ins. Adeel Rana, president of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society.
On Saturday, the officer and his brother-in-law were in East New York responding to a Facebook Marketplace ad to buy a used car. But when they go to Ruby Street, the seller pulled out a gun. Shots were exchanged, with the off-duty officer getting hit in the head.
Though his name has not yet been released, CBS2 was told he's married, has two kids, and lives in Deer Park on Long Island.
"We are lifting the family up in prayers and, right now, the family is deciding, making decisions and he's still in the care of the medical professionals," Mayor Eric Adams said.
Whatever tough decisions will be made inside the hospital, it's clear there is an overwhelming amount of support. CBS2 watched throughout the day as officers in uniform, family, and friends went in and out of this hospital, all of them hoping for the best.

Mayor Adams: Suspect who shot Brooklyn officer likely has "extensive criminal record"
As their critically injured brother remains in a Brooklyn hospital fighting for his life, detectives saturated the streets outside on Monday and drove a moving billboard around the neighborhood, determined to bring the shooter to justice.
No arrests have been made, but Mayor Eric Adams seemed confident of the suspect's background.
"When we find the guilty person, I bet you he has an extensive criminal record. I bet you he is one of the 1,700 people extremely violent in our city and that is why we are pushing for real recidivist reform," Adams said.
Police say the officer and his brother-in-law were answering an ad for a used car on Facebook Marketplace. But when they arrived at the location on Ruby Street in East New York on Saturday night, the seller pulled out a gun to rob them.
Shots were exchanged and the off-duty cop was hit in the head.
"We are lifting the family up in prayers and, right now, the family is deciding, making decisions and he's still in the care of medical professionals," Adams said.
Investigators say the suspect did not know the victim was an NYPD officer and they don't believe the robbery was connected to any others.
The officer, a five-year-old veteran of the force, works patrol at the 66th Precinct in Borough Park.
He lives in Deer Park on Long Island and is married with two children.
Among the waves of people offering his family support and comfort at the hospital is the NYPD Muslim Officers Society.
"Everyone around the world, you need to keep this officer in your prayers. He goes out there every day making sure you guys are safe. So make sure you guys do the same," said Dep. Ins. Adeel Rana.

Sources told CBS2 the officer, 26, is from Deer Park, Long Island and married with two kids. He works out of the 66th Precinct in Brooklyn.
"Everybody around the world, you need to keep this officer in your prayers. He goes out there everyday making sure you guys are safe. So make sure that you guys do the same," said Deputy Inspector Adeel Rana, president of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society.
"Definitely we are going through a really hard time. Family is going through a hardship," said Captain Waheed Akhter, vice president of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society.
Police said the officer and his brother-in-law went to East New York to buy a car he arranged to pick up through Facebook Marketplace on Saturday. The officer was off-duty and in plainclothes when the alleged seller shot him during an attempted robbery.
"There's not doubt that we will bring this culprit to justice, and he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent," said Akhter.
"When we find the guilty person, I'll bet you he has an extensive criminal record," said Adams.

An NYPD officer is fighting for his life after he was shot on Saturday night in Brooklyn.
Police say it happened while he was off duty.
A vigil was held on Sunday night outside Brookdale Hospital.
Sources say the officer is 26 years old and has been on the job for five years. Prayers were pouring in from Deer Park on Long Island, where he lives, to the hospital, where faith leaders of all backgrounds gathered.
Members of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society and the Pakistani American Law Enforcement Society spent Sunday evening visiting the bedside of their NYPD brother, who is in critical condition.
Police say the officer went with his brother-in-law to Ruby Street in East New York to buy a car he arranged to pick up through Facebook Marketplace. Police sources say he was off duty, in plain clothes, and the suspect shot him in the head during an attempted robbery.
"Everyone around the world, you need to keep this officer in your prayers. He goes out there every day making sure you guys are safe, so make sure you guys do the same," said Dep. Ins. Adeel Rana, president of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society.
Sources say a Shot Spotter alert went off after the gunfire, sending cops to the scene to find the injured officer.
It's not clear if the suspect was aware that the victim was a cop. That suspect is still at large.
"You should turn yourself in and you should turn yourself in so that you can have peace in your spirit," said Bishop Albert Jamison, vice president of the United Clergy Coalition.
Sources say the officer is married with two children and works out of the 66th Precinct in Brooklyn. The family lives in Deer Park and even though the officer doesn't regularly worship there, congregants of the Islamic Center of Deer Park shared the news with the imam, Abdul Razzaq Aziz.
"We prayed for him twice and we feel for his family," Aziz said.
"Definitely, we are going through a really hard time, family is going through a hardship, and gathering here tonight mean a lot to family and us," said Capt. Waheed Akhter, vice president of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society. "There's no doubt that we will bring this culprit to justice and he will prosecuted to the fullest extent."
It's unclear if the officer fired at the suspect.

Police visit wounded officer at Brookdale Hospital on Sunday
There are many people praying for the five-year veteran of the NYPD as he remains in critical condition.
The officer, whose name hasn't been released, was rushed to Brookdale Hospital on Saturday night after police say someone attempted to rob him and shot him in the head.
Police visited their fellow officer at Brookdale all day on Sunday. He was shot at around 7 p.m. on Saturday, three miles away on Ruby Street in East New York.
"An officer conducting a simple errand and a dangerous person pulled out a firearm. As we see so far and so often in the city, too many illegal guns are in the hands of bad people and doing bad things," Mayor Eric Adams said.
Police sources say the wounded officer was off duty, in plain clothes, and was purchasing a vehicle when he was shot in the head during an attempted robbery.
It's not clear if the suspect was aware that the victim was a cop, and sources say he was not targeted for his job.
"The officer arrived at the location accompanied by a relative. Almost immediately the suspect displayed a gun and announced a robbery. There was an exchange in gunfire when the off-duty officer was struck," NYPD Assistant Chief Michael Baldassano said.
Adams said the officer is married with children.
The NYPD Muslim Officers Society tweeted he is of Muslim and Pakistani descent, and asked for prayers.
"If anyone has any information, please inform the NYPD tip hotline. This dangerous person must be removed from our streets," Adams said.

When asked if the shooting was related to previous robberies, police said they are investigating all leads.
Again, the officer remains at the hospital in critical condition.
Suspect still on the run
An NYPD officer remains in critical condition Sunday morning after getting shot during what appeared to be an attempted robbery in Brooklyn.
Police said the officer was off-duty Saturday night when, according to sources, he was shot in the head.
The suspect is still on the run. According to police, the suspect was unaware the victim was an NYPD member and investigators do not believe it played a role in the shooting.
Overnight Saturday, police surrounded Brookdale Hospital and the street three miles away where their fellow officer was shot, and they vowed to find the person responsible.
According to officials, the officer showed up to buy a car and the seller pulled out a gun.
"The officer arrived at the location accompanied by a relative. Almost immediately, the suspect displayed a gun and announced a robbery. There was an exchange of gunfire when the off-duty officer was struck," said NYPD Detective Bureau Assistant Chief Michael Baldassano.
Detectives said the officer made the deal over social media and arrived at the meeting place on Ruby Street near Linden Boulevard at around 7 p.m. Saturday.
ShotSpotter technology alerted police.
"An officer conducting a simple errand and a dangerous person pulled out a firearm. As we see so far and so often in the city, too many illegal guns are in the hands of bad people and doing bad things," said Mayor Eric Adams.
The officer was a 5-year veteran of the force and worked patrol. The NYPD did not immediately release his identity, but he is married with children, according to the mayor.
On Twitter, the NYPD Muslim Officers Society said the officer is of Muslin and Pakistani descent, and asked for prayers.
"Far too often I stood at hospitals, with Pat Lynch on one side, the police commissioner on another, leaving the rooms with family members in mourning. Hearing that same sound, 'Tell me it is not true. Please tell me it is not true.' It hurts a lot, and it doesn't dissipate over time," said Adams.
Police are investigating if this shooting is connected to any other recent robberies in the area.
