Dressed in a gray jumpsuit, Zimmerman appeared in a Sanford, Fla. courtroom the day after being arrested for allegedly pointing a shotgun at his girlfriend during an altercation in her Apopka, Fla., home. He is charged with aggravated assault, battery, domestic violence and criminal mischief
He must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet until his arraignment on Jan. 7, 2014.
Prosecutors requested a $50,000 bond, telling Judge Fred Schott that Zimmerman's girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, had told their office she was in fear for her safety, and alleged he had previously choked her during an unreported incident a week ago. The prosecutor said Scheibe told them that she and Zimmerman were in the process of breaking up and that he had threatened to commit suicide.
Zimmerman's attorney argued for a lower bond, saying that his client had roots in Florida and "no prior criminal convictions." He also asked that Zimmerman be allowed to go back to the girlfriend's home to retrieve his belongings, but the judge said no: "This is a volatile situation,. potentially," said Judge Schott.
In July, Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin. Since then, he has had run-ins with law enforcement multiple times, including two speeding violations and an altercation with his ex-wife, Shellie.
On Monday, Scheibe called 911 saying that Zimmerman had broken a glass table in her house, threatened her, and pushed her outside.
"You put your gun in my freaking face," Scheibe is heard telling Zimmerman on the call. "Get out of my house. Do not push me out of my house. Please get out of my house."
Zimmerman also placed a 911 call from the house after police arrived. He told law enforcement he never pulled a gun on Scheibe.
"I have a girlfriend, who for lack of a better word, has gone crazy on me," Zimmerman said during his call.Complete coverage of the George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin case on Crimesider
