Zendaya cast as Aaliyah in upcoming biopic
The story of R&B singer Aaliyah will be brought to life on the small screen.
Lifetime announced Monday that 17-year-old singer/actress Zendaya will portray Aaliyah, who died in a 2001 plane crash at age 22.
Zendaya will record four of Aaliyah's songs for the film based on Christopher Farley's bestselling book "Aaliyah: More Than a Woman." Filming will take place this summer. The movie, tentatively titled "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B," is due out in the fall.
Zendaya recently competed on season 16 of "Dancing with the Stars" and released her self-titled debut full-length album last year. She will star in the upcoming Disney Channel series "K.C. Undercover" and the Disney movie, "Zapped." She previously portrayed Raquel "Rocky" Blue on the hit Disney Channel series "Shake It Up!"
