Woman dead, officer injured in University City, Mo. shooting
UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. -- A woman was killed and an officer was wounded during a shooting at a home in University City, Mo. Monday night, reports CBS affiliate KMOV.
Police are searching for a suspect and asking anyone with information to come forward.
The incident occurred about six miles south of Ferguson, where looting and demonstrations followed Monday night's grand jury decision not to indict police officer Darren Wilson in the August fatal shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown.
Police responding to a burglary call around 10 p.m. discovered a woman with a gunshot wound to the leg. She died a short time later at a local hospital.
As three officers approached the home, they were fired upon by a man inside the residence, according to KMOV. One officer was shot in the chest and wounded, according to the station. An officer returned fire as the suspect fled through the yard.
It's not clear whether he was hit.
The station is identifying the suspect as Major Washington, 33. He was last seen running towards Midland Avenue. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
It's not clear whether the University City shooting was related to the Ferguson unrest.
