John Martorano, who admitted killing 20 people, testified Wednesday for a third day in Bulger's racketeering trial in Boston.
Bulger's lawyer pointed out inconsistencies between what Martorano told investigators in the late '90s and his testimony during Bulger's trial.
Martorano acknowledged that he originally told investigators that Bulger's partner, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi, was sitting next to him in a car and fired shots at James "Spike" O'Toole as he stood behind a mailbox.
Flemmi was actually hiding in Montreal at the time.
The 83-year-old Bulger is charged in the killings of 19 people.
Tuesday, Martorano said he killed people when they hurt or threatened his family, or if they threatened to tell authorities about the gang's illegal activities. He said he always tried to help people he was close to, either by giving them money or in other ways.
"I always tried to be a nice guy," he said.
