Watch: Science project sends Hello Kitty to space

It's not often a 7th grade science project makes news. But when the results are this impressive (and the video this exciting) it's hard not to take notice. The official experiment is titled "The effects of altitude on air pressure and temperature." The video title is more to the point: "Hello Kitty in Space."

Breaking the veil between Earth and space is actually quite a bit easier than one might think. Sure, if you're trying to bring cargo to the International Space Station, it helps to have an agency like NASA at your back. But for a science project, a simple weather balloon kit -- like the kind used in this video, from High Altitude Science -- will suffice.

The Hello Kitty doll and homemade rocket do not come with the kit. But every budding space agency needs to leave their mark somehow.

The video itself was shot with a GoPro camera -- the go-to camera for high altitude feats.
