Victim in apparent Texas road-rage shooting expected to recover
HOUSTON - A Houston-area woman who was allegedly shot in the head in an apparent road rage incident is expected by doctors to recover, her husband says.
Officials on Friday said 28-year-old Kay Hafford was hospitalized in fair condition. Her husband, Kendrick Hafford, said she was receiving treatment for the wound in the back of her head at the Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute in Houston.
"Oh she's tough. She's a tough cookie. She's gonna be alright," Kendrick Hafford told CBS affiliate KHOU, adding that her survival is "miracle."
Hafford was driving to work in her red sedan on Interstate 45 in Houston's northern suburbs when she honked her horn at a white sport utility vehicle shortly after 7 a.m. Friday, said Assistant Chief Mark Herman of the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office.
"At some point, the individual in the white SUV drove up to the right side of her vehicle, at which time one gun shot was fired," Herman said.
Hafford was able to pull off the interstate and call 911, he said, but "she was incoherent because she was in and out of consciousness."
The driver of the SUV was described only as a man in a blue cap, Herman said.
Herman is asking for information from anybody who may have seen the incident. However, he warned against any contact, even eye contact, with a suspect.
