Vanessa Marcotte case: Suspect enters plea in death of Google employee slain on jog

WORCESTER, Mass. -- A man charged with killing a Google employee from New York who went missing while out for a run near her mother's Massachusetts home has pleaded not guilty.

Angelo Colon-Ortiz was held without bail after entering his plea to a murder charge Wednesday in the death last summer of 27-year-old Vanessa Marcotte.

During his court appearance, he was allowed to remain out of sight at the request of his lawyer, who cited an "identification issue." He stood behind a door, listening to a Spanish translator through headphones, reports CBS Boston.

Marcotte was visiting her mother in Princeton, about 40 miles west of Boston, last August when she failed to return from a run. Her body was found hours later in a nearby wooded area.

The 31-year-old Colon-Ortiz, of Worcester, was arrested in April after prosecutors say his DNA matched samples from Marcotte's body. Last month, a grand jury indicted Colon-Ortiz for murder. He had already been charged with aggravated assault and battery and assault with attempt to rape in Leominster District Court, but those charges will be dismissed because of the more serious murder charge, according to CBS Boston.

The prosecution and defense reportedly agreed on no bail for for Colon-Ortiz.

"He isn't in a position to make any bail," defense attorney Ed Ryan told the station. "If it was $10,000 he couldn't, so it's a moot point."

Ryan said his client isn't doing well.

"Its very difficult," he said. "He doesn't speak any English, he's never been involved in any court process at all, and he's quite nervous and frightened."

Marcotte's family was in court and sitting in the front row during Colon-Ortiz's arraignment, but did not speak to CBS Boston afterwards.

Colon-Ortiz is due back in court August 24.
