Utah Shooting Suspect Captured

A gunman killed two people and wounded at least three others during a rampage at a hotel and nearby restaurant in this community south of Salt Lake City.

A suspect, Quinn Martinez, 21, was captured by police Friday morning after an all-night search, Sgt. Kevin Thacker said.

Martinez surrendered without incident to police after he was discovered at a house in nearby Midvale, Thacker said. A motive wasn't immediately clear and Martinez had invoked his right remain silent, Thacker said.

"He was trying to get a car. There may be more to it than that, but he's not willing to talk to us," Thacker said.

The incident began shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday in a room at the Extended StayAmerica hotel. After arguing with a woman companion over the use of a car, Martinez shot her in the leg, Sgt. Michelle Fenley said. She was treated at a hospital and released.

The man then ran to Chevy's restaurant across the street, demanding to use a telephone. He shot and killed the restaurant's 33-year-old manager, Jason Rasmussen, and critically wounded another employee, Josh Parker, 22, Fenley said.

The man then ran to the restaurant's parking lot where he shot and killed Peter Berg, 43, police said. Fenley said it was not known whether the assailant may have been trying to take Berg's car.

The gunman then attempted to carjack a vehicle being driven by Debbie Briggs, shooting her through the windshield, police said.

With the gunman running after her car, Briggs, though wounded in the jaw, drove to a convenience store three blocks away. She was helped into the store, and an employee locked the door.

"She was bleeding very badly from her head and her shirt was covered with blood," said a customer, Ryan Gibbon. Gibbon said Briggs' daughter also suffered a graze wound, something Fenley could not confirm. Briggs, 44, was in serious condition at LDS Hospital.

A handgun believed to have been used in the shootings was found in bushes near the restaurant, Fenley said.

It was earlier reported that the suspected gunman had been caught with the aid of police dogs, and that two other men were also in custody. However, Fenley said the alleged suspect actually had no involvement and was taken into custody because of "a combination of things -- eyewitnesses pointed him out, the police dogs and a bit of miscommunication."

The three men were freed, and authorities identified Martinez as the suspect. They said he had an extensive criminal record.
