U.S. stocks notch modest gains just below records
NEW YORK -- Stocks managed modest gains in another quiet day of trading that kept major U.S. indexes slightly below the record levels they reached a week ago.
U.S. homebuilders rose sharply Tuesday following a big jump in sales of new homes last month. Toll Brothers climbed 9 percent.
Electronics retailer Best Buy surged 20 percent after reporting better online sales and lower costs, and Tableau Software jumped 13 percent after announcing an unexpected CEO change.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 18 points, or 0.1 percent, to 18,547. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index climbed 4 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,187. The Nasdaq composite added 15 points, or 0.3 percent, to 5,260.
Bond prices didn’t move much. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 1.55 percent.
