Two women reported injured in shooting at New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg, Va.; suspect in custody, police say

(CBS) CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - Two women were injured in a shooting Friday afternoon at a community college branch in the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg, Va., and a suspected gunman is in custody, CBS affiliate WDBJ reports.

One woman was reportedly airlifted to the hospital and the other woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The mall was was being evacuated of shoppers to ensure there are no further victims, as well as no other possible suspects, police said in a statement.

Police do not believe there is any continuing threat to the community at large.

One of the victims was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and the other is in stable condition at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, WDBJ reported.

The suspect's name has not been released.

Christiansburg 911 Dispatch received a call at approximately 1:55 p.m. reporting a subject with a gun at the New River Community College satellite location, inside the mall. The caller reported hearing shots fired, police said.

The Roanoke Times spoke with Sergio Pollock, who was reportedly in the mall using a computer at the time of the shooting. He reportedly told the paper he saw a man with a gun walk into the lobby of the New River Community College campus and point a gun at a woman.

Pollock ran and didn't see shots fired, but numerous people who were inside the mall said they heard three shots fired, according to the paper.

Montgomery County Schools were briefly locked down as a precaution. That lockdown has since been lifted.

According to WDBJ, New River Valley Community College is closed for the rest of the day and all activities around New River Valley Mall have been suspended.

Christiansburg, where the college and mall are located, is about 40 miles southwest of Roanoke.
