Two Detroit teens charged in shooting death of 84-year-old church security guard
(CBS/AP) DETROIT, Mich. - Two Detroit teenagers are being held without bond on murder charges in the shooting death of an 84-year-old security guard in a church parking lot, CBS Detroit reports.
Police said Joseph Lewis, Jr. was working on May 9 at Victory Way Assembly Church of God while Bible study was taking place inside when 18-year-old Alandre Boone and 15-year-old Anthony Williams walked up, struggled with him and one shot Lewis. Lewis was armed but his gun was found in its holster.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worth said Boone and Williams are charged with second-degree murder and a felony firearm charge. They were arraigned Wednesday in Detroit District Court and denied bond.
Detroit Police Inspector Dwayne Blackmon told CBS Detroit that Lewis was a well-known community member, which helped them solve the case.
"Everyone in the neighborhood knew the victim. He's been there for years and that was one of the things that were instrumental in solving this case because the community was really in outrage," Blackmon said.
Blackmon said police received several anonymous tips in addition to eyewitnesses who came forward in the case. He said police still don't know the motive, as there appears to have been no robbery.
The son of Joseph Lewis, Anthony Lewis, said he would like to sit down with the two young men, along with their parents and ask them why they did it.
Anthony also expressed sympathy for the Williams family, saying that just as he lost his 84-year-old father, they too are going to lose their 15-year-old son.
Meanwhile, Williams denied in court killing the guard and defense lawyer Donald Cook said Williams should be presumed innocent. Wayne County prosecutor's spokeswoman Maria Miller said Wednesday that Boone had no lawyer.
Their preliminary examinations are set for June 5.
