Trump names Jets owner to serve as ambassador to the United Kingdom
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Jets owner Woody Johnson to serve as ambassador to the United Kingdom.
Mr. Trump congratulated Johnson on being named to the role at a luncheon in Washington, D.C. Thursday as he began to attend events for his inauguration a day later.
Johnson, 69, has owned the Jets since 2000 and serves as the chief executive of Johnson Company, Inc. He’s also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
He is a major Republican donor, fundraising for 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney, and served as a finance chairman on former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Until Johnson is confirmed by the Senate, Lew Lukens will serve as interim ambassador, succeeding President Obama’s last ambassador to the U.K., Matthew Barzun.
Mr. Trump hasn’t filled many of his ambassadorships yet. In December, the president-elect also named David Friedman to serve as ambassador to Israel.
