Trump meets with Chile's President Sebastian Pinera at White House
As President Trump met with Chile's President Sebastian Pinera Friday afternoon at the White House, it was domestic concerns that overwhelmed reporters' attention.
Mr. Trump deferred to the Senate, asked about Sen. Jeff Flake's request for up to a one-week delay in Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation vote in order to allow for an FBI investigation.
"Well, I'm going to let the Senate handle that," the president said. "They'll make their decisions, and they've been doing a good job, and very professional."
Mr. Trump added he found Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, "very compelling" and "credible."
Pinera's visit Friday is his first since assuming office in March.
The two, the White House says, were expected to discuss a commitment to pro-growth policies, combating drug cartels, and partnering in energy and cybersecurity. They also planned to discuss Venezuela, after Mr. Trump announced new sanctions during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly targeting Venezuela's first lady and President Nicolas Maduro's inner circle.
"We're going to talk about Venezuela, absolutely," Mr. Trump said. "... We will be discussing Venezuela, among many other things. A lot of interesting things going on in that part of the world."
