Trump campaign revokes Washington Post's press credentials
Donald Trump on Monday revoked the Washington Post's press credentials over what he and his campaign deemed unfair coverage.
Trump tweeted about the issue, calling the Post's coverage "incredibly inaccurate":
The story Trump was referring to was one on his comments today, titled "Donald Trump seems to connect President Obama to Orlando shooting." (An earlier headline on the piece read, "Donald Trump suggests President Obama was involved with Orlando shooting.") It notes Trump's comments from a Fox News appearance Monday morning, in which he seems to suggest there's a chance Mr. Obama was somehow connected to the massacre at an Orlando nightclub early Sunday morning.
"He doesn't get it or he gets it better than anybody understands," Trump said of Mr. Obama. "It's one or the other. And either one is unacceptable."
At another point in the interview, he made a similar comment: ""Look, we're led by a man that either is not tough, not smart, or he's got something else in mind," Trump said. "And the something else in mind -- you know, people can't believe it. People cannot, they cannot believe that President Obama is acting the way he acts and can't even mention the words 'radical Islamic terrorism.' There's something going on. It's inconceivable. There's something going on."
The Post slammed Trump's decision as an effort to impede the free press, saying they will continue to cover Trump "honorably, honestly, accurately, energetically and unflinchingly."
"Donald Trump's decision to revoke The Washington Post's press credentials is nothing less than a repudiation of the role of a free and independent press," Executive Editor Martin Baron said in a statement. "When coverage doesn't correspond to what the candidate wants it to be, then a news organization is banished.
"The Post will continue to cover Donald Trump as it has all along - honorably, honestly, accurately, energetically, and unflinchingly," Baron added. "We're proud of our coverage, and we're going to keep at it."
