Tragedy Turned To Something Positive

In November, 1998, Tampa, Fla. contractor Bruce Murakami's life changed forever.

On his way to work, he witnessed a horrific car accident — that took the lives of his wife and daughter. .. victims of a teen's reckless street race.

Murkami's four-year journey from grief and anger to another emotion entirely is chronicled in "Crossroads: A Story of Forgiveness," a new Hallmark Hall of Fame special airing on CBS Sunday night.

Dean Cain, who played Superman in TV's "Lois and Clark," portrays Murakami in the movie.

Cain and Murakami spoke with co-anchor Harry Smith on The Early Show Friday.

The driver at fault in the accident, Justin Cabezas, was set to go on trial.

But, when the case was to be heard in court, Murakami's strong desire for revenge was suddenly replaced by an equally powerful desire to transform his tragic loss into something positive. Over the initial objections of his sons, Murakami forged an unlikely alliance with the young man responsible for the loss of his wife and daughter.

They began speaking at high school assemblies, delivering a powerful message impossible for their audiences to ignore: Drive responsibly, or what happened to us could happen to you.
