Trader Joe's recalls cashews for possible salmonella
Trader Joe's has recalled a line of cashews due to concerns of potential contamination with salmonella.
The retail chain said it received word from supplier Heritage International Inc. that the lot of Raw Cashew Pieces with the code "BEST BEFORE 07.17.2016TF4" might be tainted.
The recall affects only this specific lot of Trader Joe's Raw Cashew Pieces. The product comes in a 16 ounce, clear, non-resealable plastic package, with a barcode number of 00505154.
According to a statement from the FDA, the product was distributed only to Trader Joe's stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin.
No illnesses associated with the product have been reported to date.
Heritage International initiated a voluntary recall after routine testing revealed the presence of salmonella in one lot of the Raw Cashew Pieces. Additional testing found no further traces of contamination.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness with symptoms of fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Most healthy people recover within four to seven days, but the organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Customers who purchased the specific lot code of the Raw Cashew Pieces are urged not to eat them and either throw them away or return them to Trader Joe's for a refund.
