Tornadoes Tear Through Texas

Residents in parts of west Texas will spend Monday cleaning up after a string of powerful tornadoes tore through the region.

At least four tornadoes terrorized the small northwestern Texas town of Elbert, which lost its cotton gin, other businesses and several homes in Sunday night's storms.

There were no reports of serious injuries. But Ron Sadler, dispatcher for the Throckmorton County Sheriff's Department, said a truck was blown onto its side by the high winds. The driver suffered minor injuries.

Barns and three mobile homes were destroyed and several homes were moved off their foundations in the town located about 50 miles southwest of Wichita Falls.

CBS News Reporter Tricia Kean reports the storms were also responsible for dropping hail the size of tennis balls.

The twister tore down power lines to the town of 150 people and crews worked Monday to restore electricity.

"We've got the power crews out there right now trying to get things working," Sadler said.

The twister hit around 6 p.m., "but we got plenty of warning, got everybody notified," said Sadler. "We got word to them and got them into cellars."

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth confirmed three tornadoes in neighboring Young County - one was reported to be a half-mile wide, CBS News affiliate KWTV reports. Damage to the area was minor and included fallen electrical lines.

Two tornadoes moved past the town of 3,300 and another touched down in the western part of the county, said Steve Fano, a weather service meteorologist in Fort Worth.

The nasty weather was not isolated to Texas. In Oklahoma, storms brought heavy rains to southwestern and central parts of the state leaving some motorists stranded.
