Top 5 Summer Fashion Trends
There isn't just one major fashion trend this summer, so there's something for everyone.
Suze Yalof Schwartz, the executive fashion editor at Glamour magazine, visited The Saturday Early Show with the five major trends that will keep you looking cool during the dog days of summer.
Schwartz says this year you will see a wide spectrum of color, styles and prices in fashion. She suggests wearing in-your-face, sexy outfits instead of the demure, prairie look from last summer. Schwartz also says anything fringed, whether it is a bag, jacket or skirt, is out. Consider wearing big floral prints this summer, she says, because the romantic small floral prints are also not the trend this season.
These are the looks modeled on the show - expect to see less expensive knock-offs in stores.
Asian Inspired:
Gucci (embroidered silk) dress, $3,495
Gucci shoes, $450
Schwartz says Asian influenced looks are all the rage this spring and summer - from kimonos to chinoiserie. Roberto Cavalli and Gucci made the looks huge with their Asian-printed minidresses. The mini is another trend, according to Schwartz. What's great about this look is that it can be knocked off for $10 in any store in Chinatown, she says.
Printed Trench
Moschino cotton trench, $1,655
Juicy Jeans, $120
Steve Madden thong sandals, $60
Schwartz says the modern version of the trench coat is anything but khaki. It's fun, bright and printed.
This is the perfect summer trench, she says, because it matches everything and looks great with a pair of jeans. The coat is lightweight enough for summer but it can also take you into early fall. Schwartz says it's a great investment.
Floral Dress
Donna Karan dress, $2,395
Fredericks of Hollywood heels, $50
Schwartz says a major summer trend is this look from the '50s, and the bow and floral detail give this dress that retro feel. She says the summer dress can be worn to summer weddings or any other party. According to Schwartz, the dress looks great on women with a big bust because its very supportive and its A-line shape hides hips - great for pear-shaped women.
Cropped Jacket and Cropped Cargo Pant
Marni jacket, $990
Claudie Pierlot pants, $135
Colin Stuart shoes, $49
Schwartz says this season, shorter is better. Hemlines are moving up, pants are getting shorter and jackets are getting cropped. This cropped Marni jacket is a great cover up for the summer, she says. Throw it over a tank for a casual look or a pencil skirt for a more polished look.
Military inspired cargo pants are also huge for summer, says Schwartz. They are a casual, comfortable alternative to jeans. This military trend has been going on for some time now, she says. The pants are just cut slimmer than before.
Bright Printed Dress
Celine, $1,650
Schutz Shoes, $98
Brights are big for spring and summer, says Schwartz. Eye popping colors, such as orange and fuchsia are showing up on everything from evening dresses to shoes. Schwartz says this dress looks amazing with a tan, and it really gives small busts a boost.
