Tobey Maguire sued over illegal high stakes poker winnings, says report
(CBS) - Actor Tobey Maguire is one of a number of Hollywood personalities being sued for their winnings in connection with an illegal underground high-stakes poker game, according to reports.
The suit stems from the conviction of Brad Ruderman, the CEO of Ruderman Capital Partners, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail in January 2010 for operating a wire fraud and investment adviser fraud scheme that lost investors $25 million, RadarOnline.com reports.
Ruderman participated in the high stakes poker games and reportedly lost money to celebrities including Maguire. In order to pay off his debts, Ruderman allegedly devised a Ponzi scheme. Now Maguire is being sued by the trustee of those who lost money in the scheme.
Other A-listers implicated in the no-limit Texas Hold 'Em games, which allegedly had a buy-in of $100,000, include Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, reports RadarOnline.com.They are not being sued.
According to RadarOnline.com, director Nick Cassavettes, actor Gabe Kaplan and others are the subjects of suits.
Under California law, it's illegal to play for money at underground poker clubs. None of the participants are under criminal investigator, according to Star Magazine.
