Tina Stewart Murdered: Roommate charged in Middle Tenn. St. basketball player's death
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Murfreesboro police are investigating the fatal stabbing of Clantina "Tina" Stewart, a Middle Tennessee State University women's basketball player at an off-campus apartment complex.
The 21-year-old was a junior at MTSU and is originally from Memphis. Her roommate was taken into police custody.
Police received an anonymous 911 call from Raiders Crossing Apartment on Hazelwood Street just before 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived on scene they found Stewart, stabbed several times, reports CBS affiliate WTVF.
Police said that two females assaulted Stewart.
Emergency medical teams rushed Stewart to Middle Tennessee Medical Center with multiple trauma wounds, where she died from her injuries.
Investigators have arrested Stewart's roommate, Shanterrica Madden. She was charged with first-degree homicide and booked into the Rutherford County Jail. A bond hearing was set for Thursday morning.
Officials said the two women got into a fight in their apartment when Madden pulled out a knife and stabbed Stewart.
MTSU President Sidney McPhee said he and his wife, Liz, knew Tina personally and she had attended Thanksgiving at his home for the past 3 years when she could not make it home to Memphis.
"[Tina was] a wonderful, talented and vibrant young woman, and also a very gifted athlete. I speak for the entire Blue Raider family in expressing our deepest sorrow in Tina's passing, and our most profound sympathies to her family," said President McPhee.
He said he spoke with Tina's father, Adrian Jackson, by phone around 8:30 p.m. to express his sympathy for their loss.
"The anguish I feel as a father and a president, not only as a University President, but personally as a father with a daughter about the age of Tina, cannot adequately be expressed with words," said McPhee.
McPhee said they have campus counselors on hand for students who need help with dealing with the tragic loss. A vigil has been planned for 6 p.m. on campus at the Murphy Center.
