(CBS News) LOS ANGELES - The slapstick humor that made the Three Stooges famous from their start in 1920s vaudeville was in evidence this weekend at the premiere of the Farrelly Brothers new film "The Three Stooges."

The three stars - Sean Hayes (Larry), Will Sasso (Curly) and Chris Diamantopoulos (Moe) walked the red carpet in costume Saturday in Los Angeles, making a splash with their arrival in a red rickshaw.

They ran up and down the red carpet, singing, poking one another and some fellow stars and staging pratfalls for the cameras. They later returned in street clothes for the screening.

In the movie, the trio becomes involved in a murder while trying to rescue their old childhood orphanage. "The message of this movie is that family is important," Hayes told CBSNews.com, speaking in character.

Peter Farrelly said he and his brother made the film to save the Three Stooges and their brand of humor from extinction.
