State of the race

With the first debate less than two weeks away, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are in a tight race for the presidency nationally. A new CBS News/New York Times poll shows Clinton with a narrow lead in a two-way match-up among likely voters, but it also highlights one of the Democrat’s biggest challenges: voter enthusiasm.

Dems for Trump?

The battle for Ohio in 2016 isn’t just the same old campaign to win the hearts and minds of voters in America’s swingiest swing state. Ohioans are considering very two different and polarizing personalities and their visions of what America is supposed to be. Could circumstances see some Ohio Democrats turn out for Trump?

Muslim recruit

Parris Island in South Carolina is the notoriously tough boot camp for Marine Corps recruits, but an investigation has uncovered cases in which Muslim recruits appear to have been singled out for abuse -- with deadly consequences.

“Undeclared war”

As a deadly summer comes to an end in Chicago -- August was the city’s deadliest month in nearly two decades -- advocates there say gun violence is reaching crisis level, and they’re renewing the call to address the “undeclared war” that has left more than 500 people dead so far this year.

Shaky peace

The cease-fire in Syria is not perfect, but there have been no deaths recorded and the deal has proven fruitful enough to be extended by another 48 hours. So far, however, a stalemate between opposing forces is still preventing aid trucks reaching some of the most war-ravaged parts of the country.

Clinic infections

At least seven children have been hospitalized and hundreds more could be tested for suspected bacterial infections linked to a California dental clinic. Health officials are investigating, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been notified. We look at one possible culprit.

Hacking

Russian hackers have released more Olympians’ medical records stolen from the World Anti-Doping Agency. That and other recent breaches have raised concerns about vulnerabilities in U.S. computer networks. One security expert tells us cybercrime is now more lucrative than the illicit drug trade.
